SURREY (NEWS1130) – Surrey First’s Linda Hepner has secured a dominant win in that city.

She had the endorsement of Dianne Watts and what was good for Surrey’s outgoing mayor appears good enough for the city, the voters of which have soundly propelled Hepner into the mayor’s chair.

This is despite all polls indicating a tight race.

“I am so excited. I am so thrilled. I’m particularly thrilled to have every single one — clean sweep!”

She says she’s ready to fill the fill big shoes left by Watts. “I’ve stood on my own through many of the stronger portfolios in the city. So I’m pretty comfortable with where I am right now.”

Hepner says her first priority will be bringing more Mounties in, as promised, and securing light rail by 2018.

Safe Surrey

Former mayor Doug McCallum was in shock at the outcome. “We didn’t see it coming. In fact, we saw the opposite. So, I don’t know. I can’t explain it. We worked so hard. We had a good feel for the community and we’re shocked.”

McCallum thanked his volunteers and vowed that his Safe Surrey coalition ideas will live on and be adopted by the next council, which will not include any of his candidates.

“There probably will be a lot larger RCMP requests that will go in, for one. I think in transportation, there will be a bit bigger emphasis for trying to get funding for light rail and get it built quicker.”

He’s ruled out any other runs for political office. He says it’s time to spend time with his family, including his children, many of whom are scattered around the world.

One Surrey

One Surrey’s Barinder Rasode thanked everyone for their support. It was a disappointing loss for the team who supported “One Tough Mother.”

Rasode was met with a standing ovation as she took to the stage, to thank everyone for their support. “Tonight, this journey has come to an end. But we will continue to work together to build a better city, a better future for our children.”

“I urge all of our citizens to work with our new mayor to build a safer and stronger city. I wish the outcomes had been different. But it doesn’t diminish the hard fight and the journey we took together,” says Rasode.

She says she will continue to serve the city she loves, in one way or another, and has no plans to run federally or provincially.

Her supporters believe Rasode fought the hardest and had the best campaign, adding they are extremely proud of the 43-year old two-time council member. They say she worked her butt off every step of the way.
